The Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory

As you step through the double-door airlock system into the conservatory, the temperature and humidity shift into an authentic tropical microclimate. Over 1,000 live butterflies fly throughout the dome at any given moment. Keep your eyes open for the giant Blue Morpho, whose iridescent turquoise wings flash brilliantly when in flight, the distinctive black-and-yellow Zebra Longwing (Florida's official state butterfly), and the impressive Owl Butterfly, which displays lifelike false eyes on the underside of its wings to deter predators.

Strategically placed feeding stations offer sliced bananas, honeydew melon, and shallow sponges saturated with sugar water. At the rear of the conservatory, a large glass-walled chrysalis emergence cabinet allows visitors to watch adult butterflies break free from their pupae, pump fluid into their wings, and take their first flights into the garden.

In addition to hundreds of butterflies and exotic quails, finches, and buttonquails that scamper through the ground cover, the conservatory's headlining residents are a pair of Caribbean flamingos named Rhett and Scarlett. Hatched in 2013, the pair lives in a custom pond enclosure framed by lush ferns and flowering ginger.

Visitors on standard admission tickets can observe the flamingos freely from the main pathway as they preen, feed on special nutrient pellets, and converse in characteristic soft honks. For an unforgettable up-close encounter, the conservatory hosts a daily 'Flamingo Encounter' after 4:45 PM for small groups of up to six people, allowing guests to sit alongside the birds while keepers explain flamingo communication, breeding, and conservation.

Because the conservatory is completely enclosed and climate-controlled, it is widely considered Key West's best rainy-day attraction. When a sudden afternoon tropical cloudburst hits the island, head directly to 1316 Duval Street.

For photographers: allow your camera lens or smartphone 3 to 4 minutes to adjust to the humidity upon entering, as condensation may temporarily fog cool glass. Use a fast shutter speed (1/500s or faster) to freeze butterflies in flight, or focus on the feeding plates where butterflies remain stationary with opened wings for minutes at a time.
